Abused dog finds happy ending

Phoenix has experienced a lifetime of pain, but the 6-year-old German Shepherd has a new lease on life after being adopted by a loving couple.

The Contra Costa Times reports that the canine had been used as a bait dog in a dog-fighting group, and that he suffered from neglect and abuse. He was found by the Coastal German Shepherd Rescue wandering the streets in very rough shape. He was then taken to a care center for treatment where a number of his injuries were addressed.

Couple Thom Burg and Sarah Eichenlaub had been wanting to adopt a rescue dog for some time, and when a friend forwarded them information about Phoenix they applied to take him in.

Phoenix, who they have now renamed Dalton, is settling into his new home and is receiving the love and attention he had never known.

"He had sad eyes but kind eyes. Despite what he had been through, a sweet dog was there," Barg told the news source. "He looked like he needed a good home."

The Humane Society estimates that more than 100,000 dogs are used in dog fighting rings in the U.S.
