Animal rights groups work to protect the creatures

Animal Advocates of West Virginia is undertaking an initiative where they plan on promoting the humane treatment of animals through advocacy and educational programs.

The Journal reports that the grassroots organization is made up of people from all types of animal rescue backgrounds.

The group is focused on putting an end to puppy mills, and is also working to combat hoarding, abuse and animal cruelty. They also educate the public about the benefits of spaying and neutering and how important it is to control the pet population.

Due to a recent court decision in West Virginia, the organization has become even more active in trying to have an impact on legislative issues that deal with animal rights. They hope to mold the state into a sanctuary for animal lovers, and put West Virginia at the forefront of animal law cases.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, puppy mills house dogs in extremely poor conditions and use the animals to breed thousands of canines to be sold at pet stores.
