Saudi and Omar are two of the many exotic creatures who have found sanctuary at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, a world-renowned animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas.
Saudi arrived at the ranch a year ago, after being surrendered to the North Texas Humane Society by the man who raised him.
Omar arrived at the ranch several years ago while still a calf needing to be bottle-fed after he was rescued from an exotic animal dealer.
Although Omar has had various camel pasture mates over the years (who have since passed away from old age), the staff thinks that this was Saudi’s first experience with a friend of his own species.
These days, they share a large pasture with rescued goats and lamas.
As with their wild brethren, the pair prefer to lay facing the sun so that their heads create shade for the larger portion of their bodies where more heat is absorbed.
The Black Beauty Ranch’s nearly 1,300 acres are home to more than 1,200 domestic and exotic animals, many having been rescued from near-death situations such as slaughterhouses, biomedical research laboratories, and trophy hunting ranches. Others are discards from circuses or roadside zoos, or were former victims of the exotic pet trade.
Black Beauty Ranch and other Fund for Animal sanctuaries are supported by GreaterGood.org with the help of The Animal Rescue Site and the Gifts That Give More program.
