Children raise awareness to save the seals

Young children from a school in Syracuse, New York, formed a club with the goal of ending the Canadian seal hunt, during which the Canadian government allows hundreds of thousands of baby seals to be killed for fur each year, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) reports.

In 2008, the students created the Seal Savers Club and have since collected 1,421 signatures on a petition to end the hunt. They explained to many people how cruel and unnecessary the seal hunt is, asking for their support.

The petition was sent to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Canadian Senator Mac Harb, according to the news source.

"I am really happy to see that you are standing up for the seals and for what you think is right. I am keeping your petition in mind so I will remember that there are strong voices speaking for the seals," Harb wrote in response to the petition. "I am going to keep working until we convince the government that it is time to listen to these voices and to stop the commercial seal hunt in our country."

However, Canada's Fisheries and Oceans organization states on its official website that seals are a "valuable natural resource" and the harvest is an "economic mainstay" for many rural Canadian communities.
