Clinic celebrates milestone in spaying and neutering animals

The North Alabama Spay/Neuter Clinic has only been open since August, but they recently celebrated their 1,000 procedure in helping curb pet overpopulation.

The Huntsville Times reports that Stephen Stark and his puppy Pixie were the lucky recipients of a free procedure and a bunch of goodies after the Great Dane became the 1,000th animal to undergo the surgery.

It all started when Stark adopted his pooch and decided he wanted to have her spayed to prevent any situations where he would have to find homes for her puppies. After realizing how expensive the procedure could be, he heard about the clinic, a nonprofit that was offering the surgery at a fraction of the cost.

To help provide the procedures to members of the community at affordable prices, the clinic is holding a Plea Market in the upcoming weeks to help raise more funds. Last year the even raised more than $22,000.

According to the North Shore Animal League of America, one unspayed female dog, her partner and their offspring can result in more than 67,000 canines in six years.
