Connect To Learn is a global initiative of the Earth Institute, Ericsson, and Millennium Promise. Currently active in Millennium Villages, Connect To Learn's classrooms implement broadband technology to connect their classrooms to learning resources essential to a 21st century education.
The flagship School To School Connections program pairs village classrooms in the developing world with classrooms in richer nations to enable shared learning experiences and cultural awareness-building via the Internet.
For classrooms in Africa, these new resources are being paired with a new gender of students: girls.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, less than 20% of girls attend secondary school. Without schooling, most girls are forced into early marriage and motherhood.
"If a girl does not go to secondary school, her fate will be to marry young and have a low standard of living as a farmer," says Tadele Atakelti, Education Coordinator for the Millennium Village of Koraro, Ethiopia.
By providing young women in the villages with a chance at higher education, their standard of living rises, and their families have a better chance of escaping the crushing cycle of poverty.
