'Critter lady' loves to help animals

Darlene Schroeder is considered an animal's best friend by her friends and family. She is always keeping a watchful eye on the wildlife around her community in Mississippi, The Clarion Ledger reports.

Her nickname, critter lady, speaks volumes about her compassion for animals. She is the first to stop her car and help them across the road so they are not hit by passing vehicles.

Her most recent animal rescue involved an endangered gopher tortoise. She saw the reptile slowing moving across a highway, having already been clipped by another car.

"I didn't want anyone to run over her," she told the news source. "I got out and stopped traffic."

This was the sixth animal she had rescued in three weeks. She took the tortoise to her home and contacted researchers at the Mississippi Museum of Natural History, only to learn that it has been on the endangered species list since 1987.

The museum is looking after the gopher tortoise while searching for a site to release her back into the wild, noting that their typical habitat was not that of the county she had been found crossing the road.ADNFCR-2796-ID-19886070-ADNFCR
