Dogs may not notice irrational human behavior

Pet owners who are worried about their dog noticing their harebrained behavior may be able to rest easy - according to recent reports, canines are not able to detect strange human conduct.

Discovery.com reports that research from Germany suggests that dogs are capable of imitative learning, which means they usually adapt to a pet owner's nuttiness.

However, Claudio Tennie and his colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and at Harvard University disagree, maintaining that dogs aren't capable of social learning, a vital component for accepting irrational actions.

"There doesn't seem to be any social learning in dogs," Tennie said. "We couldn't find imitation in dogs. Dogs completely failed to do that."

Pet owners who hope for their canines to notice bizarre people around them may want to adopt a smart breed. Petrix.com reports that the most intelligent dogs are Border Collies, Poodles and German Shepherds, respectively. Labrador retrievers, Papillions and Rotweillers also made the top 10 list.
