Fashion has gone to the dogs

With New York Fashion Week in full swing, some of the city's best dressed have been since prancing around town - on all paws that is.

The New York Daily News reports on the growing number of trend-setting pooches frequenting the fashion festivities this year.

During the recent Fashion's Night Out event, several guests walked the catwalk along with their canine at upscale department store Bergdorf Goodman, showing off the latest trends in doggie fashion apparel.

Ruffles are hot this year for the girly girl doggies, while hoodies with edgy designs are big for the more butch pups. Also, neutrals are a go-to for the fussy pooch, and classic, retro looks inspired by television show Mad Men are perfect for fall.

There will also be a pet fashion held in Washington Square park featuring looks created by students enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology's brand new Pet Apparel Design program. The show will help kickoff Adoptapalooza, which will host a number of cats and dogs from animal rescue shelters that are looking for a loving home.

Americans spent more than $45 billion on their pets in 2009, according to the American Pet Products Association.
