Harry Potter fans may be responsible for low number of Indian owls

While Harry Potter is beloved by children around the world, there may be a downside to its popularity. In fact, Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has gone on the record to announce that the books have contributed to the dwindling owl population in the country, BBC News reports.

His suspicion is based on a report by Abrar Ahmed, who began an investigation into the owl trade after a friend asked him if he could locate a live, white-colored creature for her son's 10th birthday party.

"This was probably one of the strangest demands made to me as an ornithologist," he wrote in his analysis.

JK Rowling, whose infamous owl character, Hedwig, appears in many of her books, took a moment to address these rumors on her website.

"If it is true that anybody has been influenced by my books to think that an owl would be happiest shut in a small cage and kept in a house, I would like to take this opportunity to say as forcefully as I can: please don't," the author wrote.
