Iams & Eukanuba Dry Dog and Cat Food Recalled

On August 3rd, Proctor & Gamble expanded its recall of two lots of prescription renal cat food to include multiple varieties of Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas for both cats and dogs, as well as specialized Eukanuba dry food, due to possible Salmonella contamination.  The food was made at a specific facility, and is being recalled as a precaution.  It was sold in veterinary clinics and at pet stores in North America.

All of the recalls are for bags of dry pet food (no canned food is included) that have "Best by" dates of 01Jul10 - 01Dec11.  This includes a variety of bag sizes, from 4 to 37.5 pounds, according to the Iams website.  The recall includes all dry sizes and varieties of:

Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas
Iams Prescription Renal Diet Cat Food
Eukanuba Naturally Wild
Eukanuba Pure
Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can affect both animals and humans.  Symptoms may include decreased appetite, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain.  Pets and people who carry the disease can infect others, so if you or your pet are experiencing symptoms and you have purchased and used the affected dog food, take all due precaution and see a doctor and/or veterinarian.  You can prevent spread of the disease by washing your hands thoroughly and following physician instructions.

Proctor & Gamble recommends that dry cat food affected by this recall be discarded.  Owners should contact the place they purchased the food from - refunds may be available.  For complete information, visit the Iams recall page or the FDA's recall page.
