There have been a number of stories about dogs doing all they can to save the life of a cat, but this one in particular may bring a tear to an animal lover's eye.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press
, a seriously injured white shepherd-cross was recently discovered by animal rescue
activist Criss Gerwing. The canine appeared to have been hit by a car, as one of her legs was severely mangled.
However, it was when the dog led Gerwing to her brood of babies that her true heroic nature was exposed. The news outlet reports that the pooch, now named Esperanza, had been caring for a litter of puppies and one tiny kitten.
"It's amazing when you think about it," Shawna Randolph of the Edmonton Humane Society told the press. "You have this dog who is just so giving of herself, caring for these newborn puppies and the kitten, making sure they were cared for even though she was obviously in a lot of pain."
While many people believe that cats and dogs are always at odds with one another, VeterinaryPartner.com reports that this is not true. However, the two animals should be introduced to one another with intense supervision.
