Inmates provide second chance for rescued pets

The Pen Pal Shelter provides refuge for animals from East Feliciana Parish, which has no shelter. It is run by the inmates of Dixon Correctional Center. Many of the inmates now plan to take up careers in animal care and rescue following their release.

The 9,500 square-foot pavilion-like shelter facility at Dixon was built with grant money from the Humane Society of the United States as recognition of its generosity in housing animals following Hurricane Katrina.

Pen Pal Shelter at Dixon Correctional Center, Jackson, LA, receives donations of food through Rescue Bank, a charitable partner of The Animal Rescue Site.
