Zak Anderegg was on a vacation and decided to visit the slot canyons along the Arizona-Utah border. As he propelled down into them, marveling at the wonders of nature, he came across an odd feature - a dog, KSL.com reports.
Anderegg was astonished, wondering how a canine ended up 350 feet below the surface. When he found the pooch, it was clearly dehydrated and in need of medical attention.
"Every single time I work it through my head, I come up with the same answer: someone put him there - left, abandoned," he told the news provider.
At first, he went to the local authorities who told him they would not send people out to perform an animal rescue
. He could not believe he was rebuffed, so he took matters into his own hands.
The next day, he went back to the canyon with a cat carrier and a plan. He went back down into the canyon and managed to capture the pup with a set of ropes.
Anderegg's animal rescue effort paid off, giving the dog a second chance at life. He is still amazed at his discovery that day.
"I cannot believe that I found this guy down in this frickin' pothole in this canyon," he told the news source.
