The first ever Mardi Gras-themed event for the Our House of Hope Rescue animal shelter was held in Mundelein, Illinois, and was dubbed "Mardi Pawz," according to the Lake County Sun Times.
According to the executive director of the animal shelter, Lisa Krinninger, winter is usually a very slow time for donations to animal rescue
organizations. In fact, donations "pretty much stops," Krinninger told the news source.
As such, the "Mardi Pawz" event - in which dogs and humans wore costumes and received treats and trophies - raised a much-needed $800 in donations.
Our House of Hope Rescue recently treated three dogs, two of whom had a viral infection and the third needed knee surgery.
According to the animal shelter's official website, adoptions cost about $300 and include all vaccines, flea and tick testing as well as spaying and neutering.
The animal shelter has helped rescue 163 dogs, who have all found families, reported the news source.
