OC Humane Society may have new animal shelter

The Orange County Humane Society is in the process of gaining approval for building a new animal shelter in Huntington Beach, California, according to a recent report from the Daily Pilot.

"I think it will be good for the city," Councilman Steve Rosansky told the news source about the plans for a new animal shelter.

Rosansky is a co-host for the "Pick-A-Pet" television program which showcases animals in need of adoption.

The Orange Country Humane Society currently takes in stray pets from the Costa Mesa and Westminster regions, but may soon also receive pets from Newport Beach.

About 33 percent of American homes own at least one cat, while 39 percent of American households have at least one dog, according to the Humane Society. However, the total number of owned cats - about 93.6 million - exceeds the total number of owned dogs - about 77.5 million.

Pet owners who already have an animal can help to reduce the number of dogs and cats who end up in animal shelters by having their pets spayed and neutered. This is one of the fastest and most effective ways of decreasing animal overpopulation.
