Petfinder.com releases most popular names for dogs and cats

Pet parents who are hoping to name their four-legged friends something unique may want to take a look at the recent data collected by PetFinder.com. The website, best known for placing scores of rescue animals in a loving home, has released the top 10 names for dogs and cats in 2010.

Coming in first place for pooches was none other than Buddy, which has held the top spot for the past four years. The moniker was followed by Max, Daisy, Bella and Lucy, respectively.
For cats, Lucy continued its reign for the second year in a row and was followed by Midnight, Bella, Molly and Smokey.

It looks as though having a memorable name can be a wonderful asset for dogs and cats looking for a loving family.

"We often hear that adoptable pets get more attention on both Petfinder.com and in the shelter when they have interesting names," Petfinder.com co-founder Betsy Banks Saul told PeoplePets.com. "Therefore, for many reasons, we encourage as much creativity as possible!"

According to the Humane Society of the United States, between six and seven million cats and dogs are cared for in shelters every year.
