Petfinder helps animal rescue center with vaccine grant

Canine influenza virus can be prevented with vaccines and a new grant from Petfinder.com has enabled the S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue center in Thousand Oaks, California, to better take care of its dogs, according to the Thousand Oaks Acorn.

Since canine flu is relatively new, many people do not know about it. However, cases of dog flu have been found in 35 states and is considered to be a growing problem.

Dog flu is spread much the same way as human flu - by coming into contact with someone who has the illness. However, for dogs who go to doggy daycare and share toys with others, the disease is even more likely to be passed on.

Canine cough or bordetella vaccination is not the same as canine flu vaccination.

The Petfinder.com Foundation has a program aimed at increasing community immunity and the organization has teamed with Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health to support the grant.

There are 77.5 million household dogs in the U.S., according to the Humane Society. Thirty-nine percent of U.S. homes have at least one dog.
