Physical education professor organizes 5K run/walk to raise money for animal shelters

Tom Ducatte, a professor of physical education at East Stroudsburg University, recently organized a run/walk to benefit local animal shelters, reports the Pocono Record.

Ducatte owns a dog he adopted from a Safe Haven animal rescue and wanted to give back to the organizations that made the relationship, going on three years, possible.

The event, called the ESU Slutter Alley 5K Run/Walk, was held held on July 16th at 8:30 a.m. Registration too place at ESU’s Fine Arts Center at 7:30 a.m.

Many local businesses donated time and goods to the event. Gift certificates for local businesses were given to participants, and ESSA Bank & Trust supplied running lights to the first 100 runners.

"The more I talk to people you start to see these people need a lot of help financially," Ducatte told the news source.

Animal shelters play an important role in matching potential pet owners with animals, says the Humane Society. Unwanted and stray pets can receive a new lease on life with the help of rescue shelters.

More than 2 million dogs were adopted from shelters in 1997 throughout the United States, according to the National Council on Pet Population Study & Policy.
