The Rise of the Planet of the Apes won one of many awards given at the recent Genesis Awards, a ceremony hosted by the Humane Society of the United States to recognize media that is promoting positive animal causes, The Associated Press
The film, a 2011 science fiction blockbuster, was intended to act as an origin story to the Planet of the Apes film series. The movie was lauded at the Genesis Awards for raising awareness about the abuse of chimpanzees kept and used for laboratory experiments.
The film follows one extremely intelligent chimp that was raised by humans and left behind at an abusive sanctuary. The chimp leads a revolution to save animals
from exploitation and mistreatment by humans.
Other winners at the Genesis Awards included The Colbert Report, which received the Sid Caesar Comedy Award for its satire on whaling and a Utah legislator's proposal to kill feral animals. The Ellen Degeneres Show was named outstanding talk show of the year for its interview about dogfighting and puppy mills with HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle, Reuters
