When the Littler family adopted Hercules, a St. Bernard, from a local animal rescue
shelter recently, they did not imagine that the dog would save the day.
However, just six hours after they brought Hercules home, the dog prevented an intruder from entering the family's home through the basement door, Animal Planet reports.
Lee and Elizabeth Littler were getting ready to take their new dog on a walk when he started growling, even though he had not made a noise since they picked him up at the shelter. All of a sudden, he plowed through their screen door and chased after the intruder, clamping down on the man's ankle as he tried to climb a fence to get away, according to the news source.
"To have adopted a dog six hours before the incident and have him already defending you with that resolve, it's amazing," Lee Littler told ABC News. "If you show care and affection to your animals, they will return it."
The news source reports that police have not yet found the man that Hercules chased away from his new family's home.
