Ten-pound dog saves a life

A ten-pound Maltese, Benji, saved his 81-year-old owner who was asleep one night as smoke was rising from her basement.

Jean Bryant was woken up at 1 a.m. by her dog. At first, she thought Benji needed to relieve himself outside, Flint News reports. After returning inside, Jean noticed smoke filling up in her house. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States, someone is injured from a fire every 31 minutes.

She told the news source that she immediately hit the deck and headed toward the porch just outside the bedroom. The news source did not specify if Jean had smoke detectors placed in the house.

Rick York, Bryant's son, told the news source that he is sure Benji saved his mother's life.
Carrie Woodzell - who had become very close with Jean - was desperately looking for the woman as she noticed the fire. She told the news source, she found Jean in an ambulance and they were so happy that they were laughing about the whole ordeal.
