U.S. governors honor hero dogs

Twenty-nine governors in the U.S. have made proclamations of October 1, 2011 as American Humane Association Hero Dog Day in their states as of October 5, the association reports.

Governors have taken action to proclaim this to recognize heroic dogs everywhere after the president and CEO of the American Humane Association invited them over the summer.

The designation aims to recognize the important work of many dogs - whether working dogs, therapy dogs, or plain house pets that improve or save human lives every day. The initiative comes alone with the association's Hero Dog Awards effort, which was a nationwide search for hero dogs that were worthy of the award.

The organization investigated the cases of hundreds of dogs in all 50 states over the course of six months. More than 400,000 people voted on the nominated dogs, narrowing it down to the selection of eight extraordinary dogs in law enforcement, therapy, hearing and guiding services, the military and ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things.

On October 1, all eight dogs were honored at an awards gala in Los Angeles.
