Goal: 30,000 Progress: 3,236
Sponsored by: The Animal Rescue Site

Animal rights activists still shudder at the disaster that was the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, where thousands of stray dogs were rounded up and killed leading up to the games.

Somehow, another country with a horrendous animal rights record was awarded the winter games next: South Korea, a nation which eats dogs.

During Sochi's games, 2018 Games chief Kin Jin-sun was asked how South Korea would handle the dog meat issue. He said, "It cannot be raised at Games time because there is no practice of eating dogs in Korea."

This is a lie.

Dog-meat restaurants were banned by Seoul in the mid-1980s because of fears that international condemnation might impact the 1988 Olympics held there. Despite the ban, the dog-meat industry has continued and remains largely unsupervised to this day.

Now South Korea is hosting another Olympics, this time outside of Seoul. We need to build on the victories of the 1980s and force the South Korean government to enforce a nationwide ban on the consumption of dog meat.

Until they enact such policies, stand up for dogs by boycotting South Korean businesses, tourism, and the 2018 Winter Olympics all together. South Korea can't continue to eat dogs and expect us to contribute to their economic prosperity!

To President Geun-Hye Park and the International Olympic Committee,

I am writing today to express my deep disgust at your nation's choice to continue to consume dog meat.

During Sochi's games, 2018 Games chief Kin Jin-sun was asked how South Korea would handle the dog meat issue. He said, "It cannot be raised at Games time because there is no practice of eating dogs in Korea."

This is a lie.

In the mid-1980s, in preparation for the 1988 Olympics and Seoul, officials came together to ban dog-meat restaurants in Seoul. Now the Olympics are returning to South Korea, and with it, the international community's concerns about the treatment of dogs.

Your ineffective and unenforced ban on restaurants serving dog meat will not be enough to quell outrage this time. Only a total ban on the consumption of dog meat will suffice.

Until such policies, I and each of the undersigned are actively boycotting South Korean goods and businesses, refusing to travel to South Korea, and will completely boycott the 2018 Winter games in Pyeongchang. South Korea can't continue to eat dogs and continue to enjoy economic prosperity!

Signed,
