For the last 130 years, the White House has had a President, a First Lady, and a First Pet. Not since Andrew Jonson has the White House been without a pet roaming the halls. This break with tradition may seem small, but the impact and visibility of a President and their pet is much more far reaching than people realize.

In the US, roughly 44% of households have a dog, and 35% have cats. The benefits of having animals cannot be overstated, from companion animals saving and protecting lives, to animals that provide fur therapy simply cuddling with their families, pets are a mainstay of the country.

Canine friendship can offer the leader of the free world much more than just a chance to play on the White House lawn. Apart from encouraging exercise and an emotional boost, presidential pups are an symbol of intrepid freedom and responsibility to all the citizens of our great country.

Bringing a pet back into the White House also gives President Trump a chance to do something no other president has done before him: adopting a shelter animal. 7.9 million pets end up in shelters every year, all of them deserving of a loving home. Taking in an older, trained dog could set the Trump presidency apart from any of his predecessors.

The country stands to gain an awful lot, as well. The added immunity toward allergies and sickness that pets often lend their closest friends could translate to better concentration on the job, and fewer sick days. A dog can make work more enjoyable, and when your work is running the U.S.A., that's a very valuable trait.

The President is one of the most visible leaders in the world, and their relationships with their animals have helped to inspire so many to adopt pets into their own loving homes. By adopting one of the millions of animals in shelters around the country, President Trump can serve as an example of animal stewardship.

Seeing a president loving and caring for their pets is an inspiring image, one that helps encourage people to emulate the same behavior. What better way to set a precedent for Americans to adopt, and not to shop, than for the President to make a furry new friend?

Dear President Trump,

For more than a century, the White House has had a First Pet, and iconic tradition that benefits animals across the world. Images of presidents and their pets have been a part of our culture for so long, to not have an animal in the White House is something that must continue.

As one of the most visible people in the world, your display of love, empathy, and consideration for animals could help to inspire countless adoptions. With millions of animals in shelters desperate for a home, the inspiration you could offer may save thousands of animals from euthanasia.

Please consider adopting a shelter pet from any of the shelters around the country. Help inspire others to save animals, and experience the love and affection that comes with having a pet.
