In 2010, our rescued Shih Tzu Prissy left us for the next great adventure. She was my husband’s dog through and through—always waiting for him on the stairs. If somebody else came through the door, she would be disappointed: “Oh…it’s just you.” After a while we were browsing the pet-finder site looking for a Chihuahua (my husband had always wanted one). We found several that were marked like Boston Terriers (we’ve always had at least one Boston Terrier in the house) and they would be at an adoption event in Kirkwood, Missouri that weekend. The adoption event was going to feature quite a few rescue groups. We drove over an hour to get to the event and saw the cute little Chihuahuas. We both agreed that they were just too small for us. As we were walking around someone from Senior Pets for Seniors walked by with a Shih Tzu on a leash and my husband just melted into a big puddle of goo! We met “Tiara” and held her and my husband fell in love! We were informed that Tiara was a “turn in” from a breeder and that she had been in a cage for 6 years having litter after litter of puppies. When we took her home, though, we were a little concerned. She showed no emotions or expressions (not something we were used to as Prissy pranced around the house), but it turns out this is tragically very typical for dogs used as cage breeders. It has taken a lot of time and effort but once again we have a dog that waits on the stairs for Dad to come home. The rest of us, she tolerates. Her name is now Olive (Ollie) and she loves her Dad!
