I inherited Silly from a family member, and she was soon the best friend of Sophie the Lab. Sophie and I were heartbroken when we lost Silly to cancer four short years later, and I decided we needed a new furry friend. Despite numerous trips to local shelters and rescues, I couldn’t find the right dog to fit into our little family; it was just too painful thinking of replacing Silly. The day after I made the decision to stop looking, I spotted a dog on the freeway. In fear she would run into traffic and be hit, I immediately pulled over and called her to me. She came without hestitation so I put her in my car and took her home. The next day I took her to Sophie’s vet who scanned for a microchip and, because we had no clue of her background, vaccinated her when I said I would keep her until I found her owners or a new family. It was rough going at first; the pup was about 9 months old and a bit wild. Not finding her owners I assumed she had been abandoned and set out to find her a home. No one wanted her and pretty soon it became obvious she wasn’t going anywhere. In keeping with naming Sophie after Sophia Loren, one of my favorite actresses, I decided to name her after another Italian actress, Gina Lollobrigida, Lola for short. That abandoned wild pup became Lola, the Freeway Wonder Dog, the sweetest girl who loves everyone and everyone loves back.
