Phaedra was surrendered to the local kill shelter in Las Vegas. Her eyes spoke to me while I was browsing through the shelter's adoptable dog pages online and I adopted her the next day.

Phaedra came with serious trust issues. I believe this dog was much loved by a woman that taught her tricks while she and Phaedra were alone, but there must have been an abusive male that beat them both when he came home and the woman couldn't protect Phaedra from him. She was very thin and was such a raw bundle of nerves that she threw up everything she ate for a week. I worried that she would die from malnutrition. She is terrified of all human males, loud noises, quick movements and has severe separation anxiety. We are working on her issues slowly and she has already taken a giant step towards trusting people again... enough to let her eat, gain some weight and sit in the same room with a human male (although she is always tense and bolts if he moves too fast or talks too loudly) I also discovered that she is very obedient... she can speak, give kisses, sit and lay down and shake hands! I'm very proud of how hard she is trying to overcome her abusive past.
