My rescue Pete

I rescued Pete from the Lhasa Rescue of Southern Mississippi. Since I found him via the petfinder website, I jokingly say we met online. I was told that Pete was taken from a kill shelter in Memphis just moments before he was to be put down. I think he knew it too. In my single years, there were times I felt Pete was my only friend and never was there a more gentle soul. Sometimes he was like having a teenager. He was very dramatic and loved to ham it up. Going to the vet, just to get food, usually resulted in lots of moaning. Once he got sick (always had stomach issues but was notorious for stealing food). My husband went to work and when he came back, he asked if I had taken him to the vet. I said no and that he seemed to have recovered nicely. Pete started moaning. My husband picked him up and put him into the bed. Pete moaned louder, as he snuggled in to my pillow. I kept telling my husband that Pete was an excellent actor & swore to him he had been running around and playing all day.By this time Pete looked nearly comatose. My husband was giving me the what for. But I knew my Petey well and I knew how to blow his scheme. I picked up the keys and went to the door. "Come on Pete. Let's ride." He leaped from the bed and came barrelling through the house like a bolt of lightening., jumping up and down and wagging his tail. My husband stood there with his mouth open!
I had Pete before my husband or any of my children. After nine years together (he was about 14 by then), I had to put Pete down. It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. The vet was even crying. My old boy had a good run in this life. He's been gone a year and I still tear up just seeing his picture.
