When I moved out on my own for the first time after college, I was excited to find a place that would allow me to get a cat. Unfortunately, my first apartment wouldn't budge on the rule, and I spent a few months in sad solitude. I moved in with a co-worker the following year, who was completely on board with the idea of a furry friend as a third roommate! Both in the News business, she had recently done a story with a smaller animal rescue organization who we both thought would be a nice place to support. I was so excited heading to the shelter, but a little worried as to how I would know to find "the one." Every time I had gone to a shelter in the past for a story, I'd see 4 or 5 furry guys I wanted to call my own! I didn't have to worry; when I walked in the door of the pet play area, many cats rushed me to say hello. But "my" cat, then named Paola, sat, just like a dog, and locked eyes with me, as if to say, "I'm yours!" I knew right then I didn't have to see another cat. That particular shelter required a 24-hour wait between deciding and actually picking up your pet (which I approved of). I wanted to grab a picture of the two year old furball to show family and friends. When my roommate and I went back inside with a camera, there she was, sitting on the window sill-she had watched us leave and wanted to know why she couldn't come too! I went back the next day and picked up the newly christened Penny Lane, my new favorite cat named after one of my favorite Beatles songs:)
