This is Rocky. He was given that name at the shelter where he was brought when a woman found him tied up and left to die. They discovered that he had open pressure sores, cataracts, and diabetes in addition to being so starved he was practically skin and bone. When I adopted him, they told me that a dog in that condition would normally have been euthanized. But not my Rocky. He was linked to an owner so they had to investigate. While investigating, they cared for him. The shelter discovered what a fighter he truly was! The sores closed and healed. He gained weight. His blood sugar was brought under control. Then one day, they determined he was ready for adoption.
I saw his picture. The shelter included the before and after. I couldn't get him out of my head. I knew that I would be the best person to care for him. I am an insulin dependent diabetic. I know diabetes, and I wanted to take care of this little love. So we went to meet him. We brought him home. He has a very comfortable, spoiled life now. He has a home, toys, a yard to play in, another chihuahua to be his friend and brother, and his very own humans.
Both of my chi mixes are very special to me. I cannot have kids of my own and they do everything they can to fill that void. They make me laugh and love every day and I cannot imagine my life without them. Rocky's brother chi, Omar, is a rescue, too. It's the only way to go. Save an animal's life, and you just may find that you save your own at the same time.
The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need — providing food and vital care for some of the eight million unwanted animals given to shelters every year in the U.S., as well as animals in desperate need around the world. Over four million animals are put to death each year in the U.S. alone because they are abandoned and unwanted.
