Our little troublemaker has been a handful since day one! His mother was a stray who temporarily adopted us and gave birth to six kittens, all healthy except the runt. After taking him in and struggling to keep him alive, our vet told us that he was born premature and with a cleft palate. A cleft palate is a birth defect of the roof of the mouth, similar to a cleft lip, and most kittens with it die of starvation or are euthanized. Six has always been a fighter and regardless of costs, we couldn't just give up on him. He kept growing, slowly, and was healthy despite sinus infections every once in a while and pneumonia when he was a month old. It came time for the repair surgery, but the money for that had to be used to remove two different objects from his cleft palate before we were able to do it. At two years old, he's a healthy ball of energy and a heap of trouble, but he still has his cleft palate which means he's still unable to eat anything except his bottle of kitten milk replacer.
The chances of a cleft palate kitten surviving without human intervention is almost zero and for surviving pneumonia as a baby the chances weren't good for him, but he's always made it through. He's part of the family, I call him my son and my mom is his grandma. We don't know what we would do without that little pooty-head! Six amazes and entertains us every day.
