After my beloved bullmastiff, Abbigail, passed away - I found solace in the local rescue near my home. When I went there I found a 4 month old Rottweiler mix that was petrified of people. He and his siblings had been abused (some had broken bones), but poor Riley suffered mental issues. He was not mean - just terrified of humans. So afraid that if you approached him he would pee and defacate. I worked with him for a long time at the rescue and thought I could do more for him at home. So I brought him home to work more with him. The rescue deemed him unadoptable and were going to put him down. I couldn't let that happen, I adopted him and he has been my faithful companion since 2003. My husband nor anyone else could get hear him (no aggression, just ran and was very fearful) - that was until last year. He now is very attached to both me and my husband (but nobody else). It only took over 8 years for my husband to gain his trust. Riley eventually trusted me but it took months after I had gotten him but I was the only one he would let near him. He is going on 10 now and has been one of the best dogs I have ever owned. My husband and I are the only one's that he trusts but that is O.K. by us - he has been a wonderful companion and we love him dearly. I don't think any dog is "unadoptable", it only takes a lot of time and effort and love.
