Commercial fishing, habitat erosion, and harvesting of leatherback eggs are the primary reasons the leatherback is endangered.
The legendary leatherback sea turtle has existed for hundreds of millions of years — and is now in grave danger of extinction.
Marine fishing and pollution, habitat erosion, and the harvesting of the leatherbacks' eggs have all contributed greatly to the turtles' demise. The turtles are fighting an uphill battle toward replenishment of their species.
The fact that human interference is greatly responsible for the turtles' endangerment is actually a promising concept — it means that, if we take steps to modify our behavior, we can help the turtles once again flourish throughout the world's marine ecosystems.
Write to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar asking him to require safer practices for commercial fishing and instate stricter regulations for marine pollution and habitat erosion.
Dear Secretary Salazar,
I am writing to ask for your help on behalf of the leatherback sea turtle.
The leatherback sea turtle is a majestic creature — one that has existed for hundreds of millions of years. They are the largest marine turtles, occasionally growing up to 2,000 pounds. They're also a peaceful species, and one that needs our help.
Commercial fishing, habitat erosion, and harvesting of leatherback eggs are the primary reasons the leatherback is facing extinction.
But this also offers hope. Since human interference has much to do with the problem, it means we are able to modify our behavior in order to help this precious species.
I hope that you will implement stricter rules for both commercial fishing as well as marine pollution in favor of saving the turtles.
Please take the time to stand up for the leatherback.
