Help Cover Underinsured Medical Needs for Children
Help underinsured families afford prescription medication for their children.
Imagine that your child suffers from Cystic Fibrosis or Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and that you have a doctor's prescription for the necessary medications. Now imagine that your insurance does not cover the cost of those drugs, or does not cover the complete out-of-pocket cost.
When out-of-pocket medical costs prove unmanageable for underinsured Americans, The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation can help. Traditional patient-assistance programs can only help the uninsured. In contrast, PAN seeks to help those patients whose insurance is inadequate to cover the costs of their treatment. Rather than consigning low-income and underinsured patients to the impossible choice between their health and their financial survival, PAN aims to bridge the gap in insurance coverage, helping patients obtain the medicine that their doctors have prescribed them.
You can help a child or young person afford prescription medication. Your donation through this Gift That Gives More™ provides:
- One Week of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Medication ($29.00). RSV causes respiratory tract infections in patients of all ages, but can be particularly dangerous for premature infants, leading to severe respiratory illness requiring hospitalization and, rarely, causing death. High-risk children can be given protective drugs such as palivizumab (brand name Synagis), but the cost is high.
- One Week of Cystic Fibrosis Medication ($100.00). Cystic Fibrosis is a congenital, lifelong disease affecting the body's organs. In 1959, the median age of survival of children with CF was six months. In the United States, the life expectancy for infants born in 2006 with CF is 36.8 years, due in large part to advances in pharmaceuticals. Intravenous, inhaled, and oral antibiotics are used to treat chronic and acute lung infections resulting from CF, and insulin, nasal steroids, and other medications may also be prescribed -- but the cost of decades of specialized medications can easily bankrupt a family without generous insurance benefits.
Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation is an independent non-profit established in 2004 and dedicated to assisting patients who cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs associated with their treatment needs. With 50 disease-specific funds, PAN assists the underinsured in accessing health care treatments. Throughout all 50 states and three U.S. territories, PAN provides trained case managers with whom patients or advocates may speak about their care. Patient Access Network Foundation provides hope at times when people have nowhere else to turn.
