Boulder Opal in Ironstone Matrix Earrings

Item # 30553
No longer available

A scintillating teardrop of natural rock, along with shimmering inclusions of genuine opal, combine to create a sublimely beautiful pair of earrings! The icy-blue sparkle of opal is set off by its surrounding ironstone "matrix" -- the stone through which the vein of opal runs. Framed by sterling silver, they make a truly unique piece of jewelry.

Many opals sold today are lab-grown or composed of opal bits bound together with adhesive. These opals, however, are 100% natural boulder opals, cut directly from the rock in which they formed. The veins of opal are a translucent sky blue, and exhibit different ranges of color from purple to red, depending on the chemical makeup of the stone. Due to the singular nature of the source stone, each teardrop is a one-of-a-kind creation of nature. These earrings were made in India using only Australian boulder opals hand selected by a German jeweler to ensure first-class quality.

Earrings have sterling silver French hooks for pierced ears. Size of stone may vary.

September 1, 2012 - This may just be my most regretful purchase yet from the Greater Goods stores. Yes, I understand that "each teardrop is a one-of-a-kind creation of nature," but my teardrops look nothing like the picture. Barely any blue opal to be seen within the drab brown stone. Hardly sublime! However, if I had received them as a gift and had no expectations of what I would be getting, I would think they are nice enough simple earrings.
