Help rescue marine mammals -- dolphins, whales, porpoises, and seals -- stranded along the coast of Cape Cod!

Massachusetts's Cape Cod is famous for lighthouses, summer cottages, and the rich variety of ocean life that teems in close proximity with humans. But all too often, the large mammals of the ocean find themselves in distress, stranded somewhere along the 700 miles of Cape Cod coastline. Without intervention from the humans nearby, stranded whales, dolphins, and porpoises often die.

When marine mammals are found in distress, IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team is there to help. Its trained personnel are able to assess the health of the animal(s) and find the best course of action -- rehabilitation where necessary and possible, relocation, release, and post-release monitoring.

You can help. This Gift That Gives More™ helps rescue stranded marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, porpoises, and seals, through IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team.

Report from the Field - Success Stories

Here are a few of the many examples of happy endings for marine mammals:

Dolphin rescue, September 2011
  • Eleven common dolphins in Massachusetts were the "largest number of dolphins we have ever rescued and released at one time." Katie Moore, IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue team manager.
  • Six Atlantic white-sided dolphins mass-stranded at Skaket Beach, Orleans and were all deemed healthy, then successfully relocated and released at Herring Cove in Provincetown.
  • An adult male harp seal at Chipman's Cove in Wellfleet was suffering from severe kidney and liver failure and was transferred to the University of New England for rehabilitation. The animal was released back to the wild two months later.
  • A young harbor seal was rescued from a beach in Dennisport and, after receiving fluids and being stabilized overnight, was sent to the University of New England for rehabilitation.

IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. IFAW seeks to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team responds to live and dead stranded marine mammals on the shores of Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Its mission is to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving response and humane care to stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and promoting public awareness through education. The team also uses small boats and special acoustic devices called "pingers" to herd marine mammals back into deeper water.
