Women's Exams in Remote Guyana

Fund an OB/GYN checkup and tests for cervical cancer for an Amerindian woman living in a remote village in Guyana.
Women's health services are desperately needed in developing countries, but for families struggling merely to survive, luxuries such as OB/GYN checkups and screenings for cervical and breast cancer are simply not a possibility. As a result, women sicken and die from conditions that would otherwise have been managed by medical professionals.
The Remote Area Medical® (RAM) Volunteer Corps has been bringing First World medicine into remote, rural areas of the South American country of Guyana. Guyana has the third highest rate of death from cervical cancer in the Western Hemisphere. Cervical cancer is preventable through screening, yet the indigenous women of Guyana have never been screened due to the extreme difficulty encountered in reaching their remote villages.
Traveling to these remote places by jeep, plane and ox cart, and soon, on foot, by canoe, and by parachute, RAM volunteers screen for cervical cancer, remove pre-cancerous lesions, and perform hysterectomies when necessary. The team is also researching new techniques that would replace Pap smear screening and enable women to be diagnosed and treated in one visit. To make this program sustainable in Guyana, RAM volunteers are also working with the Ministry of Health and with medical staff at Georgetown Public Hospital to develop Guyana's national cervical cancer screening protocol.
You can help. This Gift That Gives More™ funds an OB/GYN exam and lab tests to screen for cervical cancer for a women in a remote area of Guyana.
