In the mid 1990s, Joyeria Semilla, Spanish for "seed jewelry," began its small fair-trade workshop in the Andean town of Villa de Leyva in Colombia to provide much needed jobs and services to Colombian youth at a high risk of delinquency. The young artisans are taught a craft and learn how to use the tools of the trade, and create jewelry made from seeds and small pieces of bamboo found locally to earn income.
When the workshop can afford it, they provide a daily meal and housing to the neediest of their artisans. Unfortunately, the lack of a profitable market for the jewelry has resulted in a lower number of youth who can be employed and some services have decreased. Until recently, the jewelry was primarily sold in local Colombian markets. But now, with the assistance of fair-trade importers, the artisans have a better chance to earn a sustainable income that can provide for the needs of themselves and their families.
Untied, lariat-style necklace measures 50" L (127 cm). Handmade in and fairly traded from Colombia.
