Recycled Huipil Cell Phone Case

Item # 43274

Old-world textiles beautify and protect a modern necessity while strengthening the fabric of Mayan culture.

The indigenous Mayans still living in Guatemala are well known for their colorful native dress, lovingly created by hand on vintage looms. The huipil (wa-peel) is a traditional blouse carefully woven with intricate patterns incorporated into the fabric or embroidered on top. Each village has their own design and color combination unique to them -- many of which have remained unchanged since pre-Columbian times, and are still worn today as part of their daily wardrobe.

  • Recycled huipil & cotton lining
  • Loop for attaching to belt or purse
  • 4.25" T x 4" W (10.8 x 10.2 cm)
  • Handmade in and fairly traded from Guatemala

Daniel Nyadedzor has been featured in the San Antonio Express News.

"In 1996, after finishing school and a year's national service, I decided to help my brother who was a carver and had his own shop. I did all his paperwork.

"Initially, the work done did not measure up to internationally accepted standards. Quality control was poor. However, after working with him for a few months I realized the need to incorporate certain measures. After tasking ourselves to reach the international standards, the business grew tremendously. We have been working together all these years.

"We work with a type of hardwood known as sese for carving the masks. There are about twenty people working with us, most of them apprentices. The nature of our work involves the chipping of wood to get a desired figure or shape. It is polished and sandpapered for a smooth and quality object. Red and black emulsion paint is then used for the finish. The image is first sketched on paper though sometimes, our customers also come up with interesting ideas, too.

"Our products are always given the antique finishing, which our customers especially love, and their kind remarks and comments spur us on to do better."
