March 11, 2013 - so cute and useful!!

March 10, 2013 - These are so cute. I got a set for myself and one for my daughter as part of her Easter gift. I thought it would be fun to just sew one of these at the hem of a sweater or jacket. They are made so cute and come in a little blue hand made paper bag that is adorable too. Love them and may order more...=)

January 8, 2013 - These buttons are so cute and just add that extra touch to show your love of animals! Even the packaging that they came in was cute!

Artisan: Kaarvan Crafts Foundation

Artisan Kaarvan Crafts Foundation Most communities in rural Pakistan depend on livestock and agriculture for their livelihood, though very few own their own land. Sadly, unprecedented flooding in 2010 devastated the country, making the lives of ordinary people exponentially more difficult. Millions were displaced and thousands killed by the rising waters. With their crops destroyed and an almost absolute breakdown in infrastructure, it fell to women - for whom there were few economic opportunities due to their low social status -- to begin generating income for their families. But they faced challenges. A lack of reliable communication channels and poor access to transportation left them dependent on ruthless and exploitative middle men to sell their products. Enter the Kaarvan Crafts Foundation. Representing artisans in several provinces of Pakistan, Kaarvan is dedicated to helping women in low income communities who might otherwise be sold into marriage at an early age. Specializing in hand-embroidered scarves and other textiles, Kaarvan's artisans are paid better than the national minimum wage. A special program allows girls between the ages of 14 and 18 to work part-time, earning a substantial enough income that their parents have a compelling reason not to sell them into marriage. Instead, they are able to stay at home, further their education, and build up a dowry while contributing to the household income. As a direct benefit, these artisans, faced with a social and cultural environment that restricts their opportunities, gain the confidence to continue to expand their businesses -- improving Pakistan's traditional gender bias. Through Kaarvan women are finding a better life and creating a better world for themselves and their communities. Dedicated to the environment, they source fabrics made locally with natural fibers and eco-friendly vegetable dyes. They also use recycled scraps of wool and remnant cotton and thread in their creations. To help its artisans find continued success in the future, Kaarvan provides training in entrepreneurship, pricing and costing, quality assurance, product development, project management, and gender and environmental issues. Kaarvan actively promotes fair trade practices through its three retail shops in Pakistan and works with the Fatima Memorial Hospital in Lahore to subsidize healthcare for its members, particularly during pregnancy and birth.
