Inspire Literacy & a Lifetime of Learning in Nepal

Reading material — culturally-relevant and age-appropriate — is a critical component for establishing literacy skills, a foundation for other learning. However, schools in Nepal often lack libraries and children's books.
The challenges to the Nepalese education system are many and complex. The very mountains that give Nepal its grandeur make physical and economic barriers to building sustainable infrastructure. Most of the population lives in poverty, in rural areas with no phones, roads, clean water, or even schools.
Many government schools are in poor physical shape and underfunded, especially in the countryside. Often these schools have little furniture — even a blackboard, let alone a library and children's books.
Room to Read's Local Language Publishing programs and Reading Room (library) programs are successfully meeting these challenges in Nepal.
You can help. Here are examples of what your donation through this Gift That Gives More (TM) supports:
- Books, the key to literacy: $25 can fill a shelf with 25 local language children's books.
- Learn through play: $50 can fill a library with puzzles, games, and educational toys that develop critical thinking skills and teach problem solving.
- Looking for the next Dr. Seuss: $125 can commission a local author to write a children's book.
Many children in marginalized areas have never seen a book in their local language. Room to Read's Local Language Publishing program produces colorful, culturally-relevant books that entice the imagination and learning. Room to Read is significantly increasing the quantity and diversity of children's books in Asia and Africa that are published in local languages by sourcing and publishing new children's literature.
These books are an integral part of Room to Read's Reading Room (library) program, which establishes libraries in schools and non-formal education centers. All Room to Read libraries contain local language and English books, as well as games, puzzles, and posters. Equally important, Room to Read provides training to teacher librarians who can help children make use of library books and materials, as well as three years of ongoing support that includes book donations and teacher training.
Since Room to Read began working in Nepal ten years ago, the organization has established 2,670 libraries. They have also published 116 local language children's titles and distributed over 1.5 million copies.
