Dogs Rescued From Fighting Ring - Help Now
Help dogs recover from their ordeal in the fighting ring.
In what is believed to be the second-largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history, the United States Attorney's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized 367 dogs in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®, The International Fund for Animal Welfare, and The Humane Society of the United States assisted in the raid by official request.
The dogs were rescued and transported to temporary emergency shelters in undisclosed locations, where these three groups have joined other trusted responders to provide food and shelter, veterinary care, and behavioral enrichment. Once the investigation is complete, the responders hope these dogs can be rehabilitated and eventually placed into loving forever homes.
Dog fighting is a felony for good reason: these innocent dogs are the victims of unfathomable cruelty, forced to fight for their very lives. The rescued dogs range in age from just several days to around twelve years old.
You can help. Your donation helps provide food, shelter, safe transportation, and care for the dogs rescued in this operation as they recover from lives of cruelty and abuse.
Report from the Field
The condition of the dogs rescued in this raid varied, but one ASPCA veterinarian commented on the large number of dogs that appeared emaciated. Severely abused and neglected, with a lack of access to food, water, and relief from the 90-degree heat, they managed to survive in makeshift dog houses and tethered by chains and cables. One dog was doing her best to care for her six puppies, just weeks old, under these conditions.
"Dog fighting is a horrific form of abuse and a highly organized crime that exploits animals for entertainment and financial gain," said Tim Rickey, vice president of the ASPCA's Field Investigations and Response team. "We want to end it once and for all."
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
Report from the Field
from Tim Rickey,
Head of ASPCA's Field Investigation and Response Team
"We are 42 days in to this 90 day minimum operation. The number of animals in our care has grown to 300. We have had 31 puppies born since the rescue of their pregnant mothers. We expect about 25 more puppies over the next month. We have also brought in 16 additional dogs from Alabama and Texas all related to the original investigation. We anticipate more dogs will be rescued and brought to our sheltering facility soon, which means more dogs will be rescued from their unthinkable ordeal and never have to fight again.
Shelter operations have been going according to plan. We are rolling out the outdoor exercise program which has been a wonderful experience for the dogs. Each pod has its own exercise yard and the dogs rotate through each receiving about an hour of sunshine and outdoor exercise every day. Through the enrichment and exercise programs, the dogs enjoy balls and other fun activities for much needed mental stimulation, and socialization.
These dogs are victims of the worst form of animal abuse that exists, and we have had over 360 responders assisting with their rescue and rehabilitation. This very complex endeavor has been years in the making. Every time we engage in one of these operations, the media coverage sends a message to current and future criminals that this is no longer acceptable in our society."
