The city of Donetsk is in chaos as the Ukraine struggles with political conflict that has already resulted in deadly violence and could lead to civil war. More than 25,000 terrified people have fled the city, and many had no choice but to leave their dogs behind. Some of the dogs were left on leashes, tied to their owners' homes and unable to scrounge for food. Every day, more dogs are abandoned at the local shelter's gates, and others are found and brought there by shelter volunteers.

You can help. Just $15.00 helps feed these dogs who have no where else to turn.

IFAW Ukraine 1

Update from the Field
April 2015

For the past several months political conflict and unrest has continued throughout Ukraine. In late March, the Gorlovka animal shelter in Eastern Ukraine got a first-hand taste of the violence. Armed gunmen raided the shelter to steal supplies. They assaulted shelter workers and fired their weapons at the animals. Fortunately none of the shelter workers were seriously injured, but a shelter dog named Aisya was shot in the right leg during the burglary. Shelter workers bravely comforted the dog until the gunmen left and performed emergency surgery on her. Aisya's condition has stabilized and she's well on her way to recovery.

The reaction from the Gorlovka shelter director, staff and volunteers has been astounding. They are working tirelessly to keep their shelter running strong despite the hardships they face. Aisya's wounds serves as a stark reminder of the current state of Ukraine and the support they need to continue their brave efforts to improve animal welfare.

IFAW has awarded an emergency grant to replenish their veterinary supplies and equipment, as well help cover the cost for Aisya's life-saving surgery. Your support will help this shelter rebuild and continue to help less fortunate dogs in Ukraine. They are in dire need of help, as staff, volunteers, and animals are in the process of healing from this tragic robbery.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. IFAW seeks to motivate the public to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare and conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.
