Give overworked and abused Nepalese Donkeys a well-deserved retirement!

Approximately 1000 equines (donkeys, mules and horses) are employed in brick kilns in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. As these kilns offer harsh working conditions for the people, one can only imagine the horrific treatment set upon the working donkeys. It is not uncommon for the animals to be worked until they collapse of physical exhaustion. Poorly designed and overloaded saddles create deep wounds on the donkeys' backs and legs. Due to non-existent veterinary care, sick and injured donkeys were simply left to die. Animal Nepal stepped in to give these donkeys a helping hand.

In 2008, Animal Nepal launched a Working Equine Outreach Program to train donkey workers on proper animal welfare. The following year Animal Nepal constructed the Godavari Donkey Sanctuary, allowing the most severely overworked donkeys a chance to retire. These donkeys were all on the verge of death when Animal Nepal stepped in to rescue them. Some were blind, others lame or severely malnourished. The Godavari Donkey Sanctuary provides donkeys with good nutrition, accessible veterinary care, and a safe home.

You can help. Just $10 provides food, medicine and a blanket for one retired donkey for one day. Give these donkeys the retirement they deserve!

Update from the Field
October 2015

The first week of October, Animal Nepal welcomed six newly rescued equines to their Godavari Donkey Sanctuary. They were suffering from a mineral deficiency and overgrown hoofs. Naina is one of the female donkeys who is suffering from blindness, over grown hoofs, parasites and a broken ear. Since she is older she is getting special care in the sanctuary. Shake, is a beautiful female horse who suffers from parasites and Noby another sanctuary equine is suffering from an over grown hoof. Overall the others brought in are in overall good health.

With the arrival of festive season, the weather seems to be just perfect at Godavari Sanctuary and all their equines are enjoying every bit of it. The sanctuary now has 24 equines that are in over all good health thankfully for your help!

Update from the Field
July 2015

Life is always hectic for working equines in brick kilns. They work everyday from early morning until late evening. After several years of arduous work, owners send severely sick or injured equines to the Godavari Donkey Sanctuary. Not all of them survive, but for a lucky few, their life is revitalized at the sanctuary. There are 18 such lucky donkeys and mules in the sanctuary today. They have caretakers and a medical team who do their best to give these donkeys a well-deserved retirement.

As many know, an earthquake devastated the nation of Nepal this past April. This has led for an influx of work for donkeys in the region, as most brick kilns were either destroyed or severely damaged. Locals have relied on donkeys to carry loads of bricks throughout the mountainous region. Animal Nepal has so far rescued one mule that could no longer walk properly as a result of overwork. She is slowly recovering and having good time with other donkeys at the sanctuary.

Luckily, the Godavari Donkey sanctuary made it through the earthquake. As the area continues to rebuild, your support is greatly appreciated to both the Animal Nepal staff and the retired donkeys alike.
