Elephant Aid International (EAI) has secured an 850 acre parcel of land to create a pristine refuge for retired and rescued circus and zoo elephants. We need your help to secure the perimeter with the necessary double fencing to keep the elephant residents safe.

There are currently over 400 elephants living in United States zoos and circuses. Once they were wild but captured and put on display for entertainment. These elephants have been kept in chains or in cramped quarters for decades, unable to engage in natural behaviors and develop interpersonal friendships so necessary to their well-being.

As circuses make the decision to end the practice of including elephants in their acts, many elephants are loaned to zoos or live in chains in circus winter quarters. Without true refuges standing ready to receive elephants, rescue efforts by animal welfare organizations cannot come to a successful conclusion. As a result, elephants are moved to unsuitable places for extended periods of time or are not rescued at all.

When Elephant Aid International President & CEO, Carol Buckley, co-founded The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee in 1995, she created a new model that came to define the gold standard for elephant care in captivity. Now, under Buckley's stewardship, EAI's Elephant Refuge North America will build on the experience gained at both accredited US sanctuaries over the past two decades, as well as what EAI has learned from their numerous projects in Asia.

The land is purchased, but shelter construction and operations cannot begin until two fences are constructed with a perimeter fence and a security fence to keep intruders out and the elephants safe. We need your help to make this refuge a reality.

You can help! Just $8 will pay for one foot of the Elephant Refuge Fence Project.
